Old Jail Museum Project
We are now on our second $50,000 grant from Florida Historical Resources. This grant will allow us to refurbish the small “Women’s Jail” behind the large building, put gutters on the main building and do some small fix-up jobs in the main building.
We plan to apply for a third Historical Resources grant to remove the carport and the small cinder block storage building so we can restore the parking area and back yard area to a state it might have been in the 1950s.
Once the construction work on both buildings is complete, we will add “old Monticello and Jefferson County” photographs to the walls in the office and sheriff’s apartment and complete furnishing the apartment in the style of 1940s to 1950s. The upstairs with its grim looking jail cells will remain much the same as it must looked in the early 20th century.
